Hair and Make-up Dept. | Fashion File

The hair and make-up Dept are a union of independent freelance hair and make-up artists located in a creative studio space in Notting Dale in the backstreets of London's Notting Hill. Founded by husband and wife duo, Natasha Devedlaka and Michael Price they have been tending to our beautiful Elite girls for some years now, working throughout the fashion week craziness for all the castings and shows and they love it!
We sat down with Michael and Tash to ask them about how they got started and their likes and dislikes of working with our beautiful models...

What are the hot new make-up and hair looks this season?
Tash- Love the 60’s feel seen at Chanel created by Peter Phillips & Anna Sui created by Pat McGrath. Eyes were strong but skin keep fresh. Michael – Slicked back buns & ponytails seen at Michael Kors & Ralph Lauren.

Do you prefer working on shoots, or backstage at shows?
Shoots for sure! When we both started out shows were a buzz but we both seem like the more chilled atmosphere of the studio now. Shows are over and forgotten quick, where a good day on a shoot can produce work that will be looked back at forever (Hopefully).

What are your beauty tips and tricks?
Tash- After applying lipstick, suck your finger so not to get any lipstick on your teeth. Use a bit of Elnett on a brow brush or finger to tame eyebrow. Don’t spray direct to your face please! ha-ha. Michael: Its an old school Hollywood tip but I think a silk pillow case. Its believed to help prevent wrinkles and wont unsettle/mess up your hair.

What were you both doing before you got into hair and make-up?
Tash- I have always had a hand in make up but when I started out I worked at Great Ormond Street children’s hospital as a nursery nurse, I loved it and learnt a lot and helps me keep a level head in life and work. Michael – I got in to it straight from school.

It’s lovely that you are both married and have a business together, how did you first meet?
We first meet in Elephant & castle in a shared house that Michael moved into. We worked together on shoots but didn't get together till 5 years after that.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to become a make-up artist or a professional hair stylist?
You have to be adaptable you will meet lots of different people and work in lots of different environments, it’s mostly fun but can be challenging at times. Always be on time if not early for a job and having a good kit is very important.

What is your favorite memory of your career so far?
Tash- Meeting President Obama was pretty big for me, Not much make up needed, he has great skin& a very interesting guy. Michael – My favourite memory has to be taking my early book to see Michelangelo 15 years ago to see if I could test with his girls. He said NO! (Albeit very nicely). I don’t know what changed since I now work with his girls all the time. I guess 15 years is a lot of practice and it seems to have paid off.

What are you most proud of?
Our two beautiful children and building a business together from something we each really love and are passionate about.

What are you working on at the moment?
We just worked on a GQ magazine shoot which is coming out in June  cant wait to see it in print. We are working with a luxury brand called Box of Grey who design and sell the most beautifully made “under the bed” toys including Tamsyn Lilywhite designed leatherwear.

Top 5 products?
Make up- Giorgio Armani foundations, Laura Mercier secret brighten powder, Max factor masterpiece Max mascara, Estee launder skin care, Mac lipsticks.  Hair – Tigi Curls rock and Bumble and bumble Brilliantine, Elnett.

Favorite makeup job and hair styling job ever?
Tash- my first job aged 18 assisting Darren Evens on Portishhead music video for ‘I want to be a woman’ we made all the women look like men and all the men like women. We had a lot of fun on that shoot. Every one was confused  about who was who by the end of the day.  Michael – I've had many but aged 17 fresh from the suburbs I was asked backstage to put down my hairdryer and pick up a powder puff. I was instructed to remove lines on legs left from seams of previous outfits. I had a queue of naked 6ft models about to return to the runway in bikinis – yep that was a tough day at the office.  Hair-wise though I’d have to say working with Elite Models.

Favorite looks for the next coming season?
We always like to ask stylists, what is their own particular favorite hairstyle of all time and same for make up look? Make up – A sexy dark Smokey eye and pale lips never gets old for me. Hair – Veronica Lake sculpted waves all day every day.

What’s it like working together as husband and wife? Any funny incidents? Is it on the whole better?
Tash- I think we switch at work and just get in to our jobs we keep things very separate, which works. It’s funny when people don’t know were married and have moaned about Michael always makes me giggle. Michael – I love working with Natasha, (most of the time). Gets awkward if people start flirting and sometimes models get uncomfortable being naked in front of us knowing we are a couple.

What is it that you enjoy about styling for models and shows?
Love the creative freedom you get with models, It’s not personal for them and they are up for anything to get the right look.

What are some great hair and make up tips that you would recommend for models?
Make up – Look after your skin in side and out. Beauty really does come from within.  Spend on skin care and foundation save on other make up. Hair – Models should have a Mason Pearson mixed bristle brush and use it a lot, also I’d recommend they get very regular trims to help prevent inevitable split ends.

What is your reason for choosing this profession?
Tash- I have always loved make-believe dressing up and the excitement in the dressing room. When I found out I could get a job doing that as a teenager I never looked back.  Michael – I wanted to be an architect, I took a job in the local high street “cool” salon to earn money while I studied. Once I got that job I never looked back. I still enjoy it and have no regrets.

What do you like best about your profession?
Tash- When you make some one feel good and confident about themselves, whether they are performing doing a show or shoot. Michael – for me it is much the same, I enjoy the transformation and influence you can have on a persons sense of them self just by fixing their hair. However I’d be lying if I said it was not a huge thrill to see my work in print.
